I'll be addressing some of the questions and concerns that you expressed and share them today, and each Monday, in our Monday Memo. The first question I wanted to address involves Chartered Organizations, our partners in delivering the Scouting Experience to our young people. Scouters asked about Chartered Organizations and their Liability. Please read below the latest information from our National Council. Chartered Organization Liability Explained A) What, if any, liability coverage is provided to the chartered organizations related to the membership standards issue? B) Say a resolution is passed which allows for a change in standards and a chartering organization refuses membership and then they are sued. Currently they are not covered by BSA insurance, will BSA defend them? There has been no change in BSA’s commitment to defend litigation that may be brought against chartered organizations or councils based on their following BSA’s membership policies and whose actions are consistent with the official position of the Boy Scouts of America. Historically, there have been very few claims made, and no claims made against chartered organizations, based upon BSA’s membership policy. Any change in this position would only be made after consultation and with the authorization of the Officers in April as a part of their development and discussion of the BSA’s membership policy resolution to be presented in May. We'll review the facts that we gathered from the 6 briefings/sessions, emails and phone calls in the next Monday Memo. For more additional information from National BSA, go to www.bsamembershipstandards.org. A grateful Scout Executive salutes you for all you do for our young people! Keep up the inspirational work!
