Varsity Vision Training 2014

Even though it was a rainy weekend the California Inland Empire Council held its fourth “Varsity Vision Training” course on February 28-March 1, 2014. The course was attended by 16 Varsity leaders and 10 youth leaders. In this course the youth and leaders were trained by participating rather than lecture. The participants spent the weekend actuality learning the importance of the Five Fields of Emphasis and how they work within the Varsity Team. This course focused on how the Varsity Coach and Team Captain work together to deliver an effective program for their unit.  It reinforced the concept that a team is boy-led, and that the Team Captain is the leader and the roles of the Program Managers. In the course the Coach and Program Advisors learned what their roles are to the team.  The adult leaders and youth participates came away trained. As of March 1st the Varsity Vision course became a National BSA training course. Gavin Christen is the Council Varsity Training Chairman: Contact information gavinchristen@att.net Phone Numbers Cell 951-218-0990 Home 951-682-4380

Adventures in 2014!

Troop 652 of Rancho Cucamonga, Old Baldy District, started off the New Year with a camp out at Silverwood Lake in Hesperia. We had 28 Scouts and 7 Adults Leaders enjoy the get away to the San Bernardino National Forest. The Scouts were able to get a lot of Rank Advancement and Merit Badge work done. The the food was great, the weather was perfect and the Scouts had a blast!  (Photo #2)

In February, Mr. Eimen worked with the Scouts on their Map N' Compass Skills. He ran a One Mile Orienteering Course at Red Hill Park on the 9th and we went on a 5 Mile Map N' Compass Hike on the 16th along the Claremont Wilderness Loop Trail. (Photo #1)

We were supposed to go on a "Bike N' Camp" to Lake Perris Feb. 28- March 2nd, but decided to cancel due to the expected rainfall there (up to 4 inches). Always have a "Plan B"!  We met on Sunday the 2nd at 9:00 a.m. at Central Park in R.C. and rode our bikes along the Pacific Electric Trail to Burger Town for breakfast, then back to the park. At least we got to ride about 12 miles, a couple more miles than the Lake Perris ride would have been. (Photo #3)

Troop 652 is looking forward to taking a River Canoe Trip over Spring Break and praying for great weather!

YIS, Christy Eimen, Boy Scout Troop 652, Assistant Scoutmaster

Webelos Hike

On Monday, February 17, 2014, the Webelos of San Bernardino Packs 1, 20 and 114, took advantage of the holiday and great weather to complete a three mile hike around the hills behind California State University San Bernardino in order to complete one of their requirements for their Outdoorsman pin.

Wood Badge 2014

Greetings from the C.I.EC. Spring Wood Badge Staff! You may have noticed in the March Scouting Magazine (pages 30-33) a fantastic article on the benefits and value of attending a Wood Badge course. This scouting leadership training course is taught the world over and is generally considered the premium leadership training for scouting leaders from cubs through Venturing. The materials and sources for these courses are taught in the business community and are seen as critical elements for successful team-building, conflict management, as well as communication and project planning & implementation. The list goes on! You would be hard-pressed to find another place or training in any industry, business, or social setting that does a better job at building and refining the skills necessary to lead individuals to success in all areas of their personal and business lives. The article talks about the benefits of the training as well as some of the truly enjoyable and life-long relationship building opportunities that come with the completion of a wood badge course. Now you may be wondering what one has to do to become a participant in a wood badge course? I am so glad you asked! It just so happens that there are two courses that will take place this year within our council! They will be held at Camp Emerson just outside of Idyllwild in the beautiful San Jacinto Mountains. The CIEC website has applications available for either course. They are quick and easy to download and fill out. Fifty dollars holds your spot but I must warn you that the spring course to be held in May is filling quickly so you need to act fast. I am including the email addresses for myself and our course director Norris. Feel free to contact either one of us with any questions about the course and what is needed to join us. The council website also has the contact information for the fall course as well. Well, I think I will close for now with the sincere hope that you will come up the hill with us and see why so many people consider the Wood Badge experience the pivotal turning point in their adventure in scouting and leadership.

BSA Health Forms, now as easy as A, B, C

http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/scoutingmagazinefeed/~3/RXH1-rX7lyw/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email

Deciding which version of the BSA’s Annual Health and Medical Record you need shouldn’t raise your blood pressure.

And starting today, you’re getting a streamlined version of the BSA health forms and an easier-to-use website to accompany them. The site is the result of several BSA teams (professionals and volunteers) joining forces to make this process a painless one for you and other Scouters.

The Annual Health and Medical Record http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/HealthandSafety/ahmr.aspx (hereafter AHMR) comes in several flavors, and until now some Scouters and parents found it a little difficult to determine which version of the AHMR they or their Scout/Venturer needed.

Taking your Cub Scouts on a local tour or your Boy Scouts on a two-night camping trip? The forms you’ll need are different from those required on a camping trip lasting more than 72 hours.

Visiting the Florida Sea Base, Northern Tier, Philmont or the Summit? Be sure to print off some additional information to give your doctor.

It’s all spelled out for you on the new site. Figuring out which forms you need is a snap thanks to logos, clear language and so-big-you-can’t-miss-’em buttons you’ll click to download the proper form.

Speaking of, you’ll know you’re using the right form if it says “2014 Printing” in the lower right corner.

If you’ve already gotten your physical using the old form, though, don’t fret.

“The No. 1 concern/question I got this weekend relates to, ‘Are my current valid medical records still valid?’” says Richard Bourlon, BSA health and safety team leader. “It’s most likely folks concerned we are going to make someone fill out a new physical exam when they planned to use one they just had done in December, for instance.

“We want to assure them they are still good — the old versions will be phased out over the next year, and everyone will basically have a new one in place next summer.”

Answers to this question and others are found in the FAQs section of the AHMR website http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/HealthandSafety/ahmr.aspx. Click the “Have Questions? Get Answers Here” button at the bottom of the page and read the FAQs. Your question may have already been answered.

AHMR live webinar
Mark your calendar for the afternoon of Friday, April 4. That’s the date of a live webinar on the AHMR. You’ll hear from David Berry, the volunteer who serves as chairman of the BSA’s medical team. He led the updates and website transformation, and you can ask questions and hear him describe the changes in his own words.

New website
Just by glancing at the new AHMR website http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/HealthandSafety/ahmr.aspx, it’s easy to see how much better it is than its previous iteration. The previous version had good content, but it featured an intimidating block of text. The new version makes navigation a breeze.
