BSA 100 Historic Photo at Chino Airport a Success

By Kurt Wochholz, BSA Temescal District Centennial Chair

On Saturday, October 2, history was made as 789 scouts, scout leaders, and supporters of the Boy Scouts of America gathered on the tarmac of the Chino Airport to have their picture taken . . . from about 1000 ft. up. At 11:00 am, the Robinson R-22 helicopter lifted photographer Brett Godown so that he could capture these people spelling out giant letters of “BSA-100.” Set amongst four vintage WWII aircraft and a large number of U.S., unit, and BSA-100 flags, these folks knew that they were part of a very special event. When the helicopter landed, the photographer checked the cameras to make sure that everything was captured before a voice called out over a bullhorn “We got it!” The crowd applauded with wild cheers, and smiles were seen on everyone’s faces. As “high fives” went all around, many in the crowd made their way to a back entrance of the Planes of Fame Museum for a special visit and celebration.

This was the fourth and final BSA Centennial Celebration event of the Temescal District and people came from all over the California Inland Empire Council to take part. The flag at the hyphen between BSA and 100 was a large American flag flown over the U.S. Capitol on February 8 of 2010, the date of the hundredth anniversary, and was held by Eagle Scouts and members of the Order of the Arrow. The aircraft in the photo were a F4U Corsair, a P-51 Mustang, a SBD Dauntless , and a P-47 Thunderbolt and were supplied courtesy of the Planes of Fame Museum. The helicopter was flown by Mark Robinson and was provided courtesy of Rod Anderson and Helistream, Inc. of Costa Mesa. The event was planned over many months with the cooperation of James Jenkins and Mike Williams of the County of San Bernardino Director of Airports office. The biggest thanks of all must go to all of those who took the time to come out that morning to make this happen – the Scouts.

Keep your eyes on the CIEC website as official photos of this event will soon be available for free download. Copies will also be placed in the City of Chino’s 100 Year time capsule at a ceremony on December 11. The next aerial photo shoot will be scheduled in the year 2110.

DUNCAN® Toys and The Boy Scouts Break a World Record

(Middlefield, OHIO) – Duncan Toys and the Boy Scouts Of America® broke the Guinness World Record™ for “Most People Playing in a Marble Tournament” on September 25th in San Bernardino, California using Duncan’s trading card and marble game WarStone. The official record breaking count was 876 players, breaking the old record by 148 players.

The event was held at the Boy Scouts of America California Inland Empire Council’s 100th anniversary celebration where over 6,000 scouts, Scoutmasters® and parents attended the three day celebration. “Breaking the Guinness World Record™ is a win for all of the 3.5 million scouts across the United States,” said Michael Brown, WarStone Project Leader for Duncan Toys. “It was an incredible effort by all of the scouts to work together as a team to achieve success,” he continued. Jordan Greenstein was the tournament champion.

Duncan recently announced a $25,000 Boy Scouts of America scholarship program in conjunction with their WarStone tournament program. The California Inland Empire Council serving both Riverside and San Bernardino Counties which are home to over 30,000 scout members is the first council to take part in the scholarship program.

Duncan used its new card and marble game WarStone for the record attempt. Players shoot marbles or “stones” as assault weapons in combination with cards to knock opposing stones off the battlefield through high-velocity, high-impact attacks. WarStone is one of the few toy products that the Boy Scouts have embraced because of the marble element. Marbles are a toy that transcend the ages as the ancient Egyptians first played the game 5,000 years ago. Duncan has updated marbles for a new generation of players by adding trading cards to create an exciting new concept in games.

WarStone was co-invented by Richard C. Levy, who has many games to his credit. He also co-developed Furby™. In June of 2010, the second edition of his book, The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Cashing-In on Your Inventions, was published. Levy is available for media interviews.

    Cub Archery

We had another great day at Cub Archery on Saturday. The weather was beautiful, and the winds were calm. We had about 24 boys in the A.M. cub session, and 13 webelos in the P.M. session. The Webelos were surprised at how much smaller their target was in comparison to the Cubs target, but by the end of the session they were all hitting it! We are looking forward to the Webelos shoots on the 23rd, and the shoot-off on November 6. Congratulations to all the boys, they were all well-behaved! Here are the names of our top 5 in each session, and they are invited back to the shoot-off on November 6:

Arrowhead District Event Area Pinewood Derby Races at the CIEC BSA - 100

On Saturday Sept. 25th Arrowhead District Pack 24 & Greyback District Pack 16 held Pinewood Derby Car Time Trials. Boys and families could bring their cars to have them timed on two different pinewood derby tracks. After having their cars timed they could receive a official CIEC BSA - 100 Pinewood Derby certificate and/or a driver licence  card. Boys and families that did not bring cars were able to choose a loaner car to race for a certificate. Many cars were timed that day on both tracks. Also that afternoon there was a Pinewood Derby Car Show. Three boys received trophies for 1st, 2nd & 3rd places that were judged by a few of our Marines at the BSA - 100. Later in the afternoon there were Pinewood Derby car races for the Boy Scouts  and Cub Scouts for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies. Boys brought cars from past and present races!

Special Thanks to Arrowhead District Committee Members, Pack 24, and Pack 16 for a successful event!!!
